The Prophecy

Curious to know about his future, a man went to a fortune-teller. The fortune-teller looked into her magic ball and then her facial expression said it all.

"You will die in a bus accident," she said. "And this would happen in two to three months' time." But she couldn't say exactly when.

The man went home worried and depressed. He kept telling himself how he never really believed in fortune-tellers. Why should he now?

Two months passed and he had been thinking about what she said, day in and day out. He was living in constant fear and was having sleepless nights. Finally, he decided to lock himself in his house, where he was sure he wouldn't come in contact with any buses, for the coming month. He convinced himself that if he survived the third month, the prophecy would be broken. However, he was still not able to sleep in peace.

Another three weeks went by without incident. One morning, the man came down the stairs from his bedroom to make some coffee. His little son had left his toys on the floor of which one was a little toy bus. The man stepped on the toy bus after his last step down the stairs, slipped and knocked his head against the stairway railing and died instantly.

A realised prediction or just plain coincidence? Would the man have stepped on the toy bus if he had not been preoccupied by the prophecy? Could he have avoided the freak accident if he wasn't that listless?

Many a time, people who are in despair or dilemma would resort to consulting the fortune-teller whom they perceive as someone who can foretell the outcome of their predicaments. They would then go on to consciously or unconsciously work towards the prophecy.

It sadden me to know that there are still people who choose to lead their lives as 'prescribed' by some fortune-tellers and to be swayed towards their foretold destinies. What puzzle me is that why would anyone want to live their lives based on predictions rather than to be in control of their own lives and fates.

Life is too short and precious to be left to some predictions or assumptions. Life should not be embraced with fears and uncertainties. Life should be enjoyed and lived to the fullest. Life needs not be an anticipation; life should be a celebration. So let’s live, let’s celebrate.
